Good stuff going on!  The world may be crazy, politics may be ugly, but we’re out there making music—bringing a little beauty to the crazy world.

I have run into the coolest Cayamo Cruise people all over the United States, and they ALWAYS ask me when I’m going to be on the Cruise!  They ask about Willie Sugarcapps!  They ask about DADDY!  The ask about Brigitte DeMeyer!  Well, I have an answer for now—I will not be on the boat in 2017.  The Cayamo staff has spoken, and we are not on the boat.  Congrats to The Mulligan Brothers, Tim Easton, Bonnie Bishop—and everyone else—have a great cruise—and here’s some more good news—since it’s confirmed we’re NOT on a cruise—I’m going to California in late February for shows w/ Brigitte DeMeyer to celebrate the Mockingbird Soul album!

Big News and a Brief Rant

Posted by on Aug 12, 2016

I have lots of shows coming up.  Take a look:

Willie Sugarcapps is thriving—Paradise Right Here has been on the Americana Radio Top 40 for months!  We are about to get into a busy Fall 2016—with lots of Deep South shows, including the beginning of Frog Pond season!  And our first show at the Dew Drop Jazz Hall in Mandeville, Lousiana!

I have lots of solo shows coming up.  Rumor has it that DADDY is going to record its first new songs since 2009!

I have a new duets album coming out in January.  Songs I mostly co-wrote w/ Brigitte DeMeyer.  We sang really cool soulful harmonies on it.  Jono, Oliver and Chris from the fabulous Wood Brothers guested on the album.  Chris Donohue, Brigitte’s longtime collaborator and my bandmate in Emmylou’s Red Dirt Boys, played killer upright bass and percussion.  I’m so happy with this record.  It’s called Brigitte and Will: Mockingbird Soul.  Stay tuned!

Now a brief rant:

I am 52 years old.  I have voted in every state, local and national election that has happened since I turned 18.  Did I like all the candidates?  No.  Did I agree with everything they stood for?  Very rarely.  Did I think they were going to solve all my problems?  Absolutely not.  Have I often voted for the lesser of two evils.  Oh yeah.

So why have I gone to so much trouble to vote?

Simple.  Because someone is going to be elected to each office that is up for grabs.  There is always a reason to vote for someone, even if it is simply to keep someone you don’t like out of office.  Someone is going to appropriate the money to pave the roads, repair the bridges, hang the power lines, draw up voting districts, run the school system, accept or refuse federal money to states and local municipalities, decide whether or not to go to war and whom to go to war with.  Or not.  A President will appoint all kinds of cabinet members and supreme court justices—not to mention all the US Attorneys and Federal Judges.  Set policy on state, local and federal taxes for individuals and businesses.  Set policy for health care providers and their clients.  Someone’s going to make immigration policy.  Someone’s going to set trade policy.  Someone’s going to act or not act on climate change—make plans for the future or not.  I could go on and on.

It could be that no one will ever do what I want them to do, but I have the right to vote, and that is a precious right, so I use it.

I know who I’m going to vote for in November 2016.  I have my reasons.

Is the political system broken in this country?  Sure.  I think that’s kind of how democracy of a large land mass like the United States of America works:  it’s a big old mess.  Too many different kinds of people!  Too many different religions!  Too many people in cities!  Too many people in rural areas!  Too many rich people!  Too many poor people!  The middle class is getting the shit beat out of it!  Health care costs are dreadful!  So many issues!  It makes my head spin!

It’s real complicated, because we’re complicated.

You don’t “love or leave” a democracy—you vote and act and work very hard and the world changes.  You’ll be dead before you can actually see the change.  Sorry.  But it will come.  Just like so many thought women would never get to vote and we would never have civil rights laws.  It happened.  And guess who spearheaded these huge changes we often take for granted?  Ooh, the boogie man!  The Federal Government!

If you hate the Federal Government, then I suppose you hate your Social Security check, your Medicare, your right to vote, your right to bear arms, your right to pursue life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Those aren’t made locally, folks, them are are us all.  Nobody likes to pay taxes.  But we gotta pay ’em.  And that Constitution everyone’s always waving around?  That’s Federal.

If you hate The Media—then what the hell are you doing on The Internet?  I bet you watch the hell out of some TV.  If you hate The Media—don’t watch it.  I hardly ever watch TV—because about 99.9% is worthless.  I watch what I want, and that does not include cable news of any kind.  I don’t have cable.  I think it’s a big waste of time and money.  Thus, I don’t hate The Media.

It’s too late in my life and I’m too busy working and trying to have some fun with my family and friends to constantly bitch and whine about people that I don’t even know.  The Media, Politicians, Immigrants.  I’m going to vote based on what I believe and then go back to working and having a good time.  And then I’m going to vote again, next time it comes up.

It’s my duty as a citizen and if I don’t vote, my non-vote counts as a vote for some idiot I can’t stand.  So I vote.  No bitching and whining.  Voting, working, having fun.  I love my country and I worry about the directions it goes in.  I worry about what will happen to the wonderful people after we’ve trashed the incredibly beautiful and bountiful land.  But there’s only so much one yahoo from Alabama can do, so I’m going to go play my shows, play my recording sessions, write more songs, carve out time for friends and family and keep voting in elections.  If I thought I could do better, I’d run for office—but I couldn’t do better—so instead I VOTE and try not to be a WHINER.

peace and love to you all.  Turn off the idiot box, now.  Go ahead, you can do it.  There, that’s better, isn’t it?  Now, get out and go hear some live music.
